Nate & Kelsey - Scottish Barn Wedding

Nate & Kelsey's wedding has been in the works for a long time. Do you remember their zombie apocalypse engagement photos?

Their wedding was just as awesome! There is nothing I love more than seeing my friends from high school get married except being able to capture their big day through my lens. Click to enlarge the photos.

I met Kelsey at her hotel room to capture her getting ready moments. Getting ready including the usual - getting dressed, frantic phone calls and jumping on the bed to relieve some stress!

They held their outdoor ceremony and in-barn reception at Celery Flats on the west side of Michigan - it's an adorable venue and perfectly suited to their personalities. Kelsey finished getting ready inside and I met Nate outside - did I mention he was rocking a kilt?! Kelsey & Nate shared a moment beforehand without breaking tradition by wrapping themselves around a tree. Kelsey came outside while Nate was blindfolded and we got her into position out of Nate's line of sight. It was a sweet moment that seemed to calm both of their nerves.

The ceremony soon got underway. They were married by an officer in the Salvation Army, since Kelsey's mom is highly involved in the organization. Everything started with a traditional Scottish disarming ceremony - each of Nate's groomsmen removed a weapon from his person. Nate explained to me earlier that being physically vulnerable symbolized how you must make yourself spiritually and emotionally vulnerable before God and the one you love. After the ceremony, the weapons are returned to him in a rearming ceremony.

There was a funny moment during the ceremony when they were reciting their handwritten vows. Nate had just finishing reciting his from memory/off the cuff, when Kelsey whipped out typed, full-page vows of her own!

After the ceremony, there was the "placing of the colors," where Nate gives Kelsey a sash that is the same tartan (or plaid) as his kilt - officially bringing her into the family!

After the ceremony, we took some portraits. Nate & Kelsey's bridal party were a lot of fun and jumped at the chance to take some funny pictures.  We walked around the premises and captured the exhilaration that comes from just getting hitched! PS - check out Kelsey's unique amber ring. It's absolutely beautiful! Also, Kelsey made all of the paper flower in her bouquet by herself - they're made of maps and sheets of music.

After portraits, we walked back to the barn where the reception was taking place. They had a grilled cheese bar where guests could create their own cheesey, gooey delicious concoction and some of the most delicious cupcakes I have ever had for dessert! (Bailey's frosting and chocolate ganache anyone?!) They even had one giant cupcake to cut

At the very end, Nate & Kelsey and their guests released paper lanterns - it wasn't quite dark out, but they were very pretty as they floated up to the sky and everyone had a lot of fun letting them go!

Michael & Lynn - Urban Outdoor Wedding & Ice Cream Social

Michael & Lynn are made for each other. Their retro, downtown, outdoor, sundae social wedding was adorable - just like the two of them! Here's a snapshot of their day. Click the photos to enlarge them.

Lynn got ready at her parents house - her aunt did a great job on her hair and make-up! Her dress was beautiful - lots of intricate details!

Michael & Lynn were married downtown Flint - the heart of the city they live in, work in, and love. Although rain threatened to pour all day, we only had to endure a slight sprinkle. They were married by a friend of theirs in Riverbank park - an outdoor auditorium next to the Flint river.

During the ceremony, Lynn & Michael signed their marriage license, which I thought was pretty cool. They also shed happy tears, which their adorable ring bearer (Lynn's cousin) couldn't understand. He was so distraught at seeing Lynn cry that she took a moment to console him. He was a bit happier after that! Lynn & Michael had the benefit of hiring a second shooter - two vantage points of a very important kiss!

After the wedding, we went to take bridal party portraits around Flint. It started to rain a bit, but it tapered off and we took the opportunity to take some reflective puddle portraits.

Michael & Lynn held their reception in the Alfred P. Sloan Museum. They had an ice cream sundae bar: giant jars of maraschino cherries, bowls of whipped cream and all of the toppings you could ever want! Each guest had their share of Coke in the classic glass bottle (complete with adorable paper straw!). Instead of dancing, guests engaged in heated Pictionary battles, waged war in Risk and faced stiff competition in Uno! The maid of honor and best man gave wonderful speeches (who knew Michael had to face a bear while camping?!).

After the reception was over, we walked outside and realized we had some gorgeous light! It was pretty easy to convince Michel & Lynn to take a couple more portraits. We were even able to take the awesome homemade banner that graced the head table and turn it into a prop!

Scott & Samantha - Blue & Yellow Retro Wedding

Scott & Samantha's wedding was awesome - highlights for me included the retro/vintage vibe of Samantha's make-up and dress, the blue and yellow bird themed decor, and the sick dance moves everyone busted out at the reception!  As always, click to make the photos bigger - enjoy this snapshot of their special day!

The day started with capturing all of the girls getting ready at a bridemaid's house. Ladies - if you are ever wondering where you should be getting ready, do what Samantha did and pick someplace with lots of windows and natural light. It'll make your eyes sparkle!

Also - check out the super cute and thoughtful bridesmaid emergency kits Samantha put together for her girls. They came in handy throughout the day!

Scott & Samantha's ceremony and reception took place at the same hall, so next we headed over there for Samantha to get her dress on. We snuck peeks at the adorable place settings and other details in the meantime.  If that's not the coolest ombre cake you have ever seen, you're lying!

The ceremony took place outside on an adorable little patio in the back of the hall. Scott's uncle officiated and Samantha & Scott both wrote their own vows. I don't think there was a dry eye in the place!

After the ceremony, we took family and bridal portraits. Samantha and her sorority sisters taught me the "sorority squat!" - Scott's fraternity brothers learned a thing or two as well! The bridesmaids reenacted the cover of the movie of the same name - I've never seen it, but if it's as full of sass as these girls are, I'm sure I'll love it!

We then enjoyed dinner and some wonderful toasts by the maids of honor and best men (yes, that's plural - why have only one when two is twice as nice?). Scott & Samantha cut into that gorgeous cake and everyone burned the calories off by dancing the afternoon away!

After a while, I stole Scott & Samantha from the dance floor to take some romantic portraits by themselves. I really wanted the vibe to match the soft, vintage feel of her dress.

When we came back inside, Samantha's sorority sisters surprised her with a song. They linked arms and formed a circle. The ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau made their loving message clear - Samantha became a wife, but they'll be sisters for life!

Mark & Jessica - Rustic German Wedding

Mark & Jessica's wedding was so much fun! From the pop quiz at the alter (Jessica passed with flying colors!) to the singing broom tradition, Jessica & Mark - and their friends and family - had a stress-free, laid-back, fun wedding. Here's a quick look at their day (click on photos to make them larger):

They got married at St. Lorenz church in Frankenmuth - a gorgeous church that I have had the pleasure of shooting in once before when I photographed bridesmaid Katelyn's wedding last year.

After the ceremony we headed to a bridge. The sun was not on our side, but we still managed to get some fun shots - including my new favorite pose, Beer & Bouquets. After the bridge, we headed to Tiffany's - a local pub and favorite hangout spot. After a couple drinks and a few photos to go with them, we then went to Cross Park and the Hart one-room schoolhouse as our final portrait destination.

After a GRAND entrance, Mark & Jessica and their guests ate, danced, laughed and danced some more!  There were very funny speeches - one that even included the use of props!.

And the rings! The Milk Duds are a story in and of themselves. They are Jessica's favorite candy - so much so that instead of flowers, Mark always brings her a box or two of the chocolate caramel goodness!

CAKE! One of the highlights of any wedding. Jessica & Mark had all kinds of different cupcakes and then a small cake to cut - chocolate cupcakes, cinnamon sugar cupcakes and (my fav) lemon! According to Jessica, the cake they cut was super delicious too. Also - check out their adorable cake topper! They will be able to display it in their home and cherish it as a reminder of their special day.

One of my favorite parts of any wedding is the first dance between the newly minted Mr. & Mrs. They get to finally have some time to themselves, to reflect on the events of the day in a semi-private moment. Jessica & Mark's first dance was no exception.  Then the mother/son and father/daughter dances. Jessica surprised her dad with a polka in the middle of their traditional slow dance!

One of my favorite moments of the reception was seeing the German tradition Sie Leben Hoch for the first time. Roughly translated, it means "they live high" - and they take the high part literally! Mark & Jessica were lifted up in chairs as the celebratory song was sung/chanted. Eventually, they were given baby bonnets - complete with pacifiers! - to wear. The traditional significance of the baby bonnets was lost on me, but it was super cool to learn that they were the same bonnets Jessica's parents wore on their wedding day! The tradition ends with chugging a beer at the bar while being lifted in the air. Not a bad way to celebrate!

After Sie Leben Hoch, there was polka dancing! Lots and lots of polka dancing (and a bit of hip-hop and country the DJs worked in there). Jessica had to get creative with her dress in order to partake in the jumping and jiving. I admire her resourcefulness - a MacGyver of brides!  Finally - the main event, what everyone was waiting for - Mark's dad serenading the room via broom. Apparently singing via broom is a family tradition and happens at every wedding. Originally he wasn't going to do it, but with a little encouragement from the bride and groom he got out in the middle of the dance floor and nailed it. The whole room joined in!

DJ & Andrea - "Big Fat Slovak" Wedding

Oh. My. Gosh. DJ & Andrea's wedding was unlike any other I had ever been to. Andrea is from Slovakia and I was lucky enough  to photograph their US wedding (their second wedding will be held in Slovakia in a CASTLE - amazing!). DJ & Andrea did an amazing job of combining American and Slovakian traditions - and I have never met a more down-to-earth, fun-loving couple. Here's just a quick snapshot (pun intended!) of their day, as seen through my lens (click to see the them larger):

In keeping with Slovakian tradition, wedding portraits are done beforehand - this is the greatest thing from a photographer's point of view, especially since the ceremony traditional is a midnight! DJ & Andrea had their first look - something I really recommend to couples. They were able to enjoy a private moment together and read their vows to one another.

We took photos at an abandoned barn - complete with a rusty old Ford and a trunk that may have held some questionable content. The rest of the bridal party joined us for portraits - I absolutely loved all of the color in the bridesmaids' dresses and the sharp suspenders and striped socks the guys were sporting!

After the portraits, the party starts! Dinner was served while everyone enjoyed hearing a Slovakian band play. There was delicious cake to be eaten, enjoyed and smashed.

At dusk, the wedding ceremony began - they opted to bump the ceremony up a couple of hours from the traditional time of midnight to afford more light. DJ's father officiated and looked sharp in his bolo tie. The couple recited their WOWs - memories and special things about their partner that made them go "WOW! I want to marry this person!" Andrea's mother, home in Slovakia, was able to watch the ceremony via Skype on an iPad.

After the ceremony comes dancing! Lots and lots of dancing. Technically, DJ & Andrea's "first dance" was to Will Smith's "Get Jiggy With It" - a personal favorite of mine - but they did a traditional Slovakian dance later in the evening. DJ & Andrea's friends and family are, in a word, awesome. They were so friendly, so welcoming and so energetic - not one slow song was played and yet the dance floor was always full! The Slovakian band continued to play sets, this time intermixed with a good selection of 90s hip-hop and 2000s dance music, played by one of DJ's good deejay friends. (Did I mention DJ is a deejay? Best name/occupation combo ever!)
